Jeremy Koering of Music Faith: First question, how did you get the name Fireflight?
Dawn Richardson of Fireflight: It doesn’t have any hidden meanings. Before our first show (at our youth group) our youth Pastor came in and asked what he should tell everyone our name was, and it was at this point we realized we hadn’t decided on one yet! So I mentioned that I had been thinking and that the name Fireflight sounded cool to me, and everyone else was like, yeah lets just go with that. Since then we found out that there was a transformer named Fireflight as well!
Jeremy Koering: Where do your musical influences come from?
Dawn Richardson: I grew up listening to country music with my family, so my first influences were female country artists like Reba McEntire and Tanya Tucker. As I grew older I was introduced to rock music and I fell in love with Aerosmith and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Once I started listening to Christian music Jennifer Knapp and Nicole Nordeman really inspired me.
Jeremy Koering: How did you guys come up with the album name The Healing of Harms?
Dawn Richardson: Glenn was reading C.S. Lewis’s novel “The Silver Chair” from the chronicles of Narnia. He came upon a chapter entitled “The Healing of Harms.” It struck a chord with him and he shared it with the rest of us, and we all agreed that it really fit the project. Our songs are about finding healing and hope from God amidst our struggles.
Jeremy Koering: Your current single is You Decide, can you tell us a little about it?
Dawn Richardson: We wrote “You Decide” as a calling out to people to start reaching out to God Himself. Many times we find that people who want nothing to do with God or Christianity, feel that way because they have been hurt in the past at a church or by a people calling themselves Christians. We want people to try and put all that behind them and look to God Himself when they make their decision about who He is. If they can just do that they will feel His love.
Jeremy Koering: How did Josh Brown [Day of Fire] become apart of the song?
Our label helped us to meet up with Josh. Since then we got to work with him on the music video and tour with him on shout fest. It’s been awesome!
Jeremy Koering: Another great song is "It's you", could you explain what it's about to our readers?
Dawn Richardson: “It’s you” is a more worshipful song then the others on the album. It’s about letting go of the weight that society puts on us when it comes to being fixated on our outside appearance. It’s about realizing that our true beauty comes from God.
Jeremy Koering: Personally I like the song "Liar" the best. Why did you decide to write a song about this topic?
Dawn Richardson: I’m sure we aren’t the only ones who have been angered by people trying to use the message of the cross for selfish personal gain. When it comes to things like that we just get riled up and we used the song to try and express how it makes us feel.
Jeremy Koering: If you could have somebody listen to one song what song would you want them to hear?
Dawn Richardson: “More than a Love Song,” I really like the imagery in the song. It has an important message that we all need to be reminded of. We all need to take the fake smiles off of our faces and start really loving people the way Jesus did.
Jeremy Koering: You've performed at a lot of festivals this summer; did any of them stick out more than the others?
Dawn Richardson: I really loved all the festivals! I like Spirit West Coast in Monterey CA. The weather was wonderful and the crowd was amazing!
Jeremy Koering: Of all the bands you've toured with, have any of them been more fun to perform with?
Dawn Richardson: We have had the opportunity to tour with some awesome bands. My favorites have been Detour 180, Kids in the Way, and Nevertheless.
Jeremy Koering: Do you have any big tour plans coming up?
Dawn Richardson: Most of everything is still in the works, but we are very excited about traveling to Germany this December for Christmas Rock Night!
Jeremy Koering: Any last comments or things you'd like our readers to know about?
Dawn Richardson: Thanks to all of our fans for their support! We really appreciate everyone that has taken a chance and bought the CD. God Bless!
