Jeremy Koering of Music Faith: First off, can you tell me a little about Underoath for those who haven't heard much about you?
Grant Brandell of Underoath: Well, we're a Christian heavy rock band. That’s probably the simplest way to put it.
Jeremy Koering: How did you guys get started in music?
Grant Brandell: Everyone in the band has their own story, whether it was through family or music in church or whatever. Basically we all started playing in bands in high school and jumped from band to band till we all ended up in Underoath.
Jeremy Koering: What are your musical influences?
Grant Brandell: A lot of bands, we're pretty spread out as a band with musical influences. Some of common ground ones are The Refused, At The Drive-In, Jimmy Eat World, Radiohead, and Isis.
Jeremy Koering: What is the number one thing you want listeners to get out of your music?
Grant Brandell: As far as just music, I hope people enjoy it. It's tough to say with the word music, because I instantly think of lyrics alone. Basically I think music is a powerful tool that helps people get through situations in your life and can also change your life, whether that be finding Jesus, getting through a breakup wither someone, or a family station or just putting you in a good mood. As far as music I just hope people get something positive out of us.
Jeremy Koering: If you could have someone hear one song from any of your CDs, what song would you want them to hear and why?
Grant Brandell: Some Will Seek Forgiveness, I think that represents what our band is all about, more than anything, though the music may not be, the message is really important.
Jeremy Koering: Define the Great Line is your latest release, how are people responding to the new songs?
Grant Brandell: So far so good, we are all stoked at how it's being received by people.
Jeremy Koering: A lot of people ask me about the song Salmarnir. What language is being spoken and what is the translation?
Grant Brandell: Salmarnir is ice-landic for the word Psalm. The spoken dialogue is actually Psalm 50 in Russian, and then yelled in the background in English by Chris.
Jeremy Koering: What's the story being portrayed through the "Writing on the Walls" music video?
Grant Brandell: It's basically a murder-mystery. The boy and the girl are in love and her father pulls them apart basically not allowing them to be together. There's a mentally unstable man in the apartment building that you basically are lead to believe is the killer until the end of the video when you learn the boy is through his eyes at the end of the video. That’s a broad, quick definition of the video.
Jeremy Koering: Why did you choose the name Underoath?
Grant Brandell: There's not really in significance in it, it's just a band name honestly.
Jeremy Koering: Finally, thanks for answering our questions. Do you have any shout outs, web sites, requests or anything else you'd like www.musicfaith.com readers to know about?
Grant Brandell: MySpace! Haha just kidding, no I don't really have any shout outs. Thanks for anyone that took time to read this.
