Jeremy Koering of Music Faith: First up, how did you get started in music?
Paul Wright: I grew up in a very musical family. Both my mother and now my sister are music teachers. I always sang around the house and I’d sing in school and do plays but really began writing songs at age 12.
Jeremy Koering: Cool, did you ever dream of being signed and that sort of thing?
Paul Wright: Yes, in fact DC Talk inspired me at age 12, so to do my first national release on Gotee was really special. [MF: Yeah] The fact that Toby got a vision for my music seemed surreal [MF: That would be pretty amazing growing up listening to someone like tobyMac then later being signed because of him on his label] yeah it felt like everything came full circle. All the years of busting my butt working really hard and eventually in God's timing the door opened, but that's when the work really began. [Laughs]
Jeremy Koering: Do you have any specific message that you try to get across to people listening to your tunes?
Paul Wright: It depends on the song, overall I sort of pour out what I’m learning and going through much like a teacher or a minister, lately I am on this kick. You are God's idea so be yourself.
Jeremy Koering: Cool, if somebody could hear one song from either album, what song would you want them to hear?
Paul Wright: Good question, that's hard to pick, but probably sunrise to sunset. [MF: Why would you choose that one over any of the others?] I think that represents me the best, it's a feel good track with an emphasis on God, but I think people who don't know that still groove to it and I think that is what is cool with my music. The music speaks for itself. I've learned a lot the past 3 years, that as an artist it's all about being impressions and expressions, not being but having and if it's done in a tasteful way people respond to it.
Jeremy Koering: Were you in any bands before being signed to Gotee?
Paul Wright: Oh yeah! In Highschool I was in two groups: JC Cross and Pathfinderz, in college I was in 4 groups: 3np, Pauly Paul for President, Frunt Row Joe and Bo Peep. Then I was like man I'm just going to record a solo record under my real name and I got signed. [MF: Cool.] It's a lot easier doing it solo than with a band [MF: Really?] Totally [MF: How's that?] Well I can't break up with myself, I get to make the decisions and financially the money isn't spread over a group of people making it easier to make a living.
Jeremy Koering: Do you have a song or two you like to play live, over any others?
Paul Wright: Surfah girl and sunrise to sunset. Those are my favs right now.
Jeremy Koering: Do you have any tour plans for the summer/fall?
Paul Wright: Yeah, summer dates are up, and in the fall I want to spread my wings over on the east coast and start developing a fan base there and then go to Hawaii for a little while and play some shows there.
Jeremy Koering: Do you have a favorite place to play?
Paul Wright: Man I just played a show on the beach; they had a stage on the beach with tiki torches. I was looking out over the ocean while I played, it was amazing [MF: Sounds like fun!] it was, I prefer smaller rooms, I really like my acoustic show in a room that fits no more than 500. To give it that intimate aspect.
Jeremy Koering: Now I know you just released some digital albums on iTunes and such. Do you have any plans on a new CD?
Paul Wright: Yes and books! I am working a new CD and book called Diego's Diary the CD is a soundtrack to the book; it takes place in San Diego.
Jeremy Koering: How do you write your songs?
Paul Wright: Usually I sit down with my guitar and start strumming some chords and find a progression I really like, then I start singing to it and hooks form and such. And then I’m inspired by what I’m going through.
Jeremy Koering: Now when I was writing the questions down I just had to ask about Burrito Boy: What are you're favorite items on the menu?
Paul Wright: You'll have to go to my MySpace and look at the pictures and if you click on the burrito boy pic caption it will take you to the menu. Carne asada is my fav and nachos with just cheese then I grab some limes and squeeze them all over. [MF: Your making me hungry.] Me too
Jeremy Koering: Thanks for answering my questions! Do you have any last comments for www.musicfaith.com readers?
Paul Wright: Be my friend on MySpace!!! www.myspace.com/paulwright
