Interview: Krystal Meyers

Jeremy Koering of Music Faith: You're signed on Essential Records, your self titled debut came out last summer, and to top it all off you're only 17! What does it feel like to be so young and already be in Christian music?

Krystal Meyers: It feels really great! I feel like it’s a big accomplishment and God's been doing a lot of cool stuff! It’s most definitely a blessing!

Jeremy Koering: How did you get started in music?

Krystal Meyers: I’ve always been in love with music and singing ever since I was really little! I was singing from birth you could say! Haha! My first solo I was 5, started writing down my songs at 10, and started playing guitar at 13! I ended up getting into the business when I went to a church summer camp when I was going into 9th grade and I wrote anticonformity in my spare time with a friend! At the end of the week we played it for the camp's talent show just for fun and I ended up getting a call a month later to come into the studio to record that song! I recorded it with some of the guys from Jars of Clay and Caedmon’s Call and Audio Adrenaline, and so there’s a bit of industry right there! We then started talking to management and the in February 2004 I played a showcase that all the Christian labels came to and then signed with Essential in September 2004!

Jeremy Koering: Who are your musical influences?

Krystal Meyers: My musical influences are bands like Blindside, Silverchair, Mae, Further Seems Forever, Spoken, Imogen Heap, and Underoath!

Jeremy Koering: One of my favorite songs on your album is “Fall to Pieces”, what's the story behind it?

Krystal Meyers: Fall to Pieces is a song i wrote with one of my producers, Ian Eskelin, and there’s no specific story behind it, just the fact that trying to make it on our own is tough and unsuccessful and can cause us to fall apart, but when we invite Christ into our lives he can pick up the pieces and put us back together!

Jeremy Koering: Anticonformity, its part of who you are. How did that become such a huge part of your life? And is there any Biblical reference behind it?

Krystal Meyers: I wrote anticonformity the summer going into 9th grade, but it didn’t become very clear to me until 9th grade, when I had to put it into action! It’s about becoming the person God wants you to be and refusing to become the person the world wants you to be! So when all my friends were off getting wasted and getting high and having sex with their girlfriends and boyfriends I was turning against that and pursuing the life God has to me! It can all be looked at in Romans 12:2!

Jeremy Koering: Are you working on you're next album yet?

Krystal Meyers: I’m done with the next record pretty much! The album is in the process of being mixed and mastered and the photo shoot was shot in California 3 weeks ago! I’m really, really excited about it! To me it’s defiantly a promising and awesome follow up for the first record!

Jeremy Koering: What's your favorite venue or city to play at?

Krystal Meyers: Oh I don’t know if I could say! Every city and venue has its own appeal and flare! But the west coast is always fun, along with Florida! And Germany is fun to play!

Jeremy Koering: You've been touring on Winter Jam recently; do you have any big tour plans after that?

Krystal Meyers: I’m going to Japan after winter jam is over! I’m being taken mainstream over there, so that’s gonna open up a world of new opportunity! I can’t wait to see what God has planned!

Jeremy Koering: Are you planning on doing any music videos or big events soon that you're excited about?

Krystal Meyers: Most defiantly Japan! I’m doing a photo shoot over there at the end of the month and I’m getting a whole new wardrobe, which is exciting!!! :)

Jeremy Koering: Have you made any friends with other musicians since being signed? (If You Have) Have they helped you and your music?

Krystal Meyers: Yeah I’ve made friends with a whole array of different Christian artists since being signed!!! Day of Fire was my first band to tour with and I toured with them for the first 4 months of my touring career and Josh Brown and the guys just really took me under their wing and were awesome to me! Just seeing how Josh ministered to the audience was amazing and challenging to me! Same with Kevin and the guys from Disciple, who I toured with for 3 months! They are awesome and again, the way Kevin takes in the crowd and speaks to them is inspiring! Hawk Nelson is on our bus for the winter jam tour and they are super awesome! Their stage presence is really inspiring!

Jeremy Koering: What do you enjoy doing outside of music?

Krystal Meyers: For fun I just like to hang out with my boyfriend and friends when I’m home and go to the movies and mall and just hang out around town and around the house! I love going to shows too when I’m not playing them!!!

Jeremy Koering: Finally, thanks for answering our questions, any last comments for Music Faith's Readers?

Krystal Meyers: Thank you so much for talking to me! The last thing i would like to say is to challenge everyone to go against the pressures of the world and be strong, and pursue the life God's called you to!
