Beautiful News Album Review

Matt Redman puts his spectacular musical talent to work in his newest album, Beautiful News. The album has a slightly edgier and rockier tone than his previous records, creating an exhilarating compilation of fantastic worship songs. Releasing the day after Christmas, Beautiful News is Redman’s first album in two years. Redman’s amazing songwriting ability, along with the quality of the album, certainly makes up for the wait!

The album reflects how the God’s love is such “beautiful news” in the midst of the craziness of life. “The gospel of Jesus Christ is all together different – it’s refreshingly good news, beautiful news,” states Redman. The collection of songs definitely shows this, with an apparent theme of celebration and thanks!

With an arousing beat and lyrics like “I heard your beautiful news/It’s so amazing/So true”, the title track, Beautiful News, immediately draws the listener into the CD. The enthusiasm and lyrics of the song are undeniably inspiring.

The first radio single from the album, You Never Let Go, is next. Complete with a catchy beat and Redman’s spirited voice, the song expresses how God will “never let go” of us, despite the trials and hardships we may face. Inspired by Psalm 23, the song has a definite truth and is an invaluable reminder for our everyday lives.

The songs When All Is Said and Done & Shine feature exquisite piano-playing, which really provides a worshipful and passionate feeling, the former of which simply states “We will shine like stars in the universe/holding out your truth in the darkest place.”

Take It To the Streets, A Greater Song, Blessing, & All Over the World sport a rockier sound while celebrating the “beautiful news” that God has provided. Blessing is one of the more tenacious songs, featuring admirable guitar hooks, candid lyrics, and an overall upbeat feel, with lyrics like “You brought a blessing/And the blessing was you/Yeah Yeah.”

Thank You for Healing Me has a marginally monotonous feel, but what is lacked in that song is made up in the apparent passion poured into the lyrics of Fearfully and Wonderfully Made. The all too true lyrics reminisce the fact that we are created by God, and we should strive to live our lives wholly for Him.

Despite the shortness of If You Know, it is undoubtedly one of the gems of the album. Combined with simple and elegant piano, the serious sound of desire in Redman’s voice is inspiring as he reiterates the truthfulness of the lyrics “If you know Your loved by the King/Then sing/If you know Your loved by the King/Then live for Him.”

The album closes with Beautiful News – reprise, which appropriately has a similar sound to the title track, really bringing the album full circle.

Overall, Beautiful News is an excellent album that is filled with honest songs and intimate lyrics. Redman’s voice certainly helps pull it all together, creating an immaculate worship album that you’ll definitely want to check out!
