Dizmas "Dizmas" Album Review
Released: 2008-04-29 on Forefront Records
Forefront Records, a label known for one of the biggest names to ever hit the Christian industry, dc TALK, has now taken Dizmas under the umbrella. Dizmas is a semi-unheard of rock band out of Lancaster, California. As a fan that has heard all of their CD’s, I would say that their lack of fame is very unfortunate. Throughout their previous two CD’s, they have brought great music with some great lyrics. Now that they are with Forefront, hopefully that will change.
The self-titled albums kicks off with a mood-brightening new track called “Yours,” talking about how great life is now that life is seen from the eyes of a Christian, saying, “you are everything that I was always looking for / take me where you want me / take me ‘cause I wanna be yours… I want to know you.” It continues with songs from previous albums, such as “Play It Safe,” “Redemption, Passion, Glory,” “Shake It Off,” “Jealousy Hurts,” and “This is a Warning.” New tracks include “Yours,” “Save the Day,” “Different,” “Worth Fighting For,” and “Dance.”
“Redemption, Passion, Glory,” a song cut and re-done from their debut record On A Search in America. It’s probably one of the best songs lyrically by Dizmas to date, and shows us emotion of what Jesus did for us. It starts out, “This is redemption / that you would die for me / This is salvation / that you would live in me / this is redemption / this is salvation / this is our mission / this is our passion” and continues to the chorus, “What love is this that you would die for me / What love is this that you would die for me / What love is this that you would die for me / Let’s start this over.” This is no doubt one of the most powerful songs that I have ever heard.
In addition to the lyrics that are able to leave listeners in awe, both the vocals and the music itself can have the same effect. Zach Zegan does lead vocals and his brother Josh Zegan does background vocals. Both have great voices for any range of rock and both display that talent to great lengths in this album.
Since their first album, On a Search in America, Dizmas has softened up, going from much screamo / hard rock to radio friendly-upbeat pop / rock on their sophomore Tension, Dizmas has continued their trend of friendly-radio hits with Dizmas. Though I personally am a fan of the harder stuff, Dizmas remains one of my favorite rock bands. Though the music is light rock throughout in this particular album, they pull it off quite well, using distinctly different rhythms. Combined with amazing lyrics, great vocals, and great music, this could very well be the next big Forefront Records artist. The only real thing I can recommend is that they give diversity in how light or hard the songs are, such as they did in their previous albums.
I would recommend this to anyone who can appreciate truly Christ-centered lyrics within great rock. Though at first listen, they may not seen far from ordinary, a closer listen shows that their lyrics are well composed to bring forward a positive message well beyond average. I only hope that they aspire to be as great as dc TALK.
