Word of Mouth Album Review

Christian Hip Hopper John Reuben is back with Word of Mouth, probably John Reuben’s best work yet! With catchy lyrics, edgy beats, interesting effect usage, and a new vocal style for John Reuben I find Word of Mouth very pleasing. I’m typically not a fan of Hip Hop, but Word of Mouth is an album that I’m comfortable listening to.

Word of Mouth strives on materialism, searching for something more and how to find God. The title track lets us hear… Good God please have mercy let’s kick the machine till it’s working / everybody’s got a great idea / do you own the one you’re encouraging / there’s a first time for everything / after that it starts to get confusing / hold onto your identities loosely / at least the revolution will be amusing… Word of mouth / this is what everybody’s talking about / so you can tell somebody / to tell somebody / that what’s happening is already happening again.… which I think is an interesting play of words.

My favorite track on Word of Mouth is probably the second track called “Trying too Hard.” The song starts out with a very catchy… oh buddy the freaks come out at night till they can longer afford to socialize… then it goes into the main beat of the song… i left the party early what’s wrong with me i’m at the diner down the corner on my fifth cup of coffee pen in hand trying to recreate that feeling staring at the ceiling make them think that your thinking cigarettes and aspirin thoughts on a napkin wadded up in the trash can asking… then it goes into the chorus… oh what happened to your imagination let’s dance this night away everyone of us is born a genius until we got to cool to play… My favorite line lyrics though has to be… it’s not natural relax a little one for the drinks two for the tip three for rent the rest is for the government… When I first heard that I just laughed, John Reuben really hit the lyrics for me on this record and I think that’s what made this record his best one yet.

Instrumentally speaking, Word of Mouth, has a little of everything… it’s got guitars, great drums, banjos, and good bass. Word of Mouth also has it’s share of catchy riffs and intros. They really mixed up the music on this album it’s not your typical John Reuben sound, but it’s definitely isn’t a bad thing!

Overall, I think John Reuben scored on a great album! It’s definitely one to consider for new and old fans and fans of Hip Hop! Word of Mouth pleased me and I’m not what you’d call a fan of Hip Hop. That said, be sure and at least check this album out! If you like what you hear on Purevolume and MySpace I’d highly suggest buying Word of Mouth.
