What If We Album Review

Brandon Heath caught the ears of many with his debut, Don’t Get Comfortable. Earlier this year Heath was named New Artist of the year, along with nominations for songwriter and pop song of the year for his hugely successful “I’m Not Who I Was,” at the 39th annual Dove Awards.

Now, nearly two years after his debut, and a couple months after his winnings, Brandon brings us a new set of songs. The title asks us an open ended question, What If We.

Kicking off the record is the hip-hop flavored radio single, “Give Me Your Eyes,” a notion of asking God to let us see things in His perspective. In the chorus Heath sings, “Give me your love and humanity, give me your arms for the broken hearted, the ones that are far beyond my reach.” Brandon then gives us an autobiographical look into his life on “Wait and See.” Next we’re given a look at a struggle of faith, but given a resolution in “Trust You.” Our first look at a love song on this record comes in form of “London.” Next we’re given a very western look into the times when you’re mind is spinning and you can’t wait until day breaks in, “Sunrise.” Jars of Clay joined Heath in writing the fun and quirky, “Sore Eyes,” a song about cheering up a girl. Brandon notes, “I mean, any guy loves the challenge of making a girl who is sad laugh…” Next is “Love Never Fails” a song written about 1 Corinthians 13. The pop ballad “Listen Up” comes next, and is about the classic struggle of a guy trying to understand girls. The upbeat “Fight Another Day” encourages to fight through another day. “When I’m Alone” is a look inside being alone and questioning ourselves in the times of loneliness. “No Not One” wraps up the album on a high note. The worship song was co-written with Passion worship leader Christy Nockels, and is one of the superior tracks on the record.

No doubt about it, Brandon Heath is an amazing singer-songwriter. He’s teamed up with amazing artists and has brought us something great. In fact, I’d go as far as saying, from track one Brandon Heath had me hooked. Between his irresistible hooks, the messages laced inside the songs, and the outstanding songwriting, What If We is the premier pop release of two-thousand eight.

If you haven’t heard Brandon Heath before, now is the time to start. What If We deals with a lot of everyday problems and experiences. It’s an honest look into life through lyrics and song. If you’re a fan of Pop / Acoustic, Brandon Heath is for you! What If We is the perfect mix of slow, mid, and upbeat tempos, wrapped up with positive, encouraging, and hopeful lyrics that will hook you instantly.
